"The Canis Lupus and The Light" - a winter poem for the holidays

The poem "The Canis Lupus and The Light" is first and foremost a story, about a wolf who left its kin to find something that it sought above all else, the Light. This particular wolf traveled very far in order to find something it knew it wouldn't find where it originated from. Change was the inevitable good, although this change did not come about without its many challenges. At times, the wolf was lonely, as if its path was destined to be an alone adventure "in the wilderness" of an unfamiliar land. As a result, the wolf had to face many fears, including but not limited to the fear of loneliness. The wolf, after all, was a creature that was strong and brave, one which survived through very harsh conditions others couldn't have had. In other words, the past life with its kin was a life which prepared the wolf to survive the challenges of the new life apart from its kin. In the end, the wolf realized that this new path of life was not coincidental. The "voice of lightning" which had been always "rising with the moon," was mightier than the loudest of howls of all wolves on earth combined. This "voice" was the "calling" to a more than merely a "new" life but to an unimaginable realization that in order to find the Light one must, at times, travel far distances or look beyond one's horizons. The wolf was always filled with Light within, that is why it never felt it belonged where darkness had dwelt for too long. In the end, the wolf realizes that all it ever wanted to be was to be the creature it was meant to be, it was called to be, and it chose to be, a creature filled with the Light in a world which, sadly, often seems quite dark. I hope you enjoy this winter holiday poem and that, at the very least, you will find it interesting.
The Canis Lupus and The Light
a poem by
Carmen A. Cisnadean
Behind cold, snow-dusted coats,
Once, my brothers howled toward me,
That we were wolves and we can thrive
As part of a familiar clan, only,
I was one of a kind, life showed me.
So, I left it all behind me
Following a different rhythm,
Finding my paw prints below me
Still the heart of wolf inside me,
Floating in the air uneasy
Above ocean’s monsters hardly
Caring for my species’ feelings,
While I held on without tearing
A giant bird’s metal wings which
Carried me past the abjuring.
Via waives, some demiurge being,
Steered ahead as if by heeding.
Who was he, I asked myself,
Greater than the wolves, he must be!
Asked and questioned, as accustomed,
Until when I felt within me
Rising with the moon, a voice,
Neither lips nor jaw had parted
With an epic growling calling
The Canis Lupus deep inside me
Where a dialogue had opened,
“I’m just wolf,” said I to thee,
Voice of lightning which spoke back, to me,
“Wolf or not wolf, makes no difference,
You seek Light and Light has spoken!”
All my senses fully awakened,
Choice was mine still to be taken
When my paws touched earth again
Realizing without shame,
I chose Light and Light I am.
